Tyrone National Grave Association remembers Volunteer Hugh Gerard Coney who was shot dead by the British Army 45 years ago today, whilst escaping from Long Kesh. Hugh Gerard was one of over 30 Republican POW’s attempting to escape from Long Kesh by tunnelling from the cages, which had been burnt only weeks before. However upon emerging from the tunnel the escapees were spotted by the British Army, who opened fire, killing Vol Hugh Gerard Coney. With the alarm now raised members of the British Army, who had a camp onsite, swarmed the area, effectively ending any prospect of escape. Over the course of the next few hours 33 escapees were discovered and returned to Long Kesh where they endured vicious beatings and brutality.
